Skydiving
Skydiving
Skydiving, is a thrilling and adventurous recreational activity involving the descent from an aircraft using a parachute. Participants, known as skydivers (that’s you!), exit an aircraft at high altitudes and freefall for a period before deploying their parachutes to slow down and safely land.
History
The roots of skydiving can be traced back to the early 20th century, with the first successful freefall jump recorded in 1919 by Leslie Irvin. See the image of this trailblazing jump to the right, imagine being the first person ever to do this!
The military played a significant role in advancing parachute technology, which eventually influenced civilian skydiving. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century — with advancements in fabrics and engineering — that skydiving gained popularity as a sport and recreational activity.
Equipment
Thankfully, since that first jump over 100 years ago, skydiving equipment has evolved significantly to enhance safety and performance.
Modern skydiving gear typically includes a jumpsuit, helmet, altimeter, and, most importantly, a parachute system. Parachute systems consist of a main parachute and a reserve parachute as a safety precaution (your parachute with be installed with this excellent safety device). Advanced technology, such as Automatic Activation Devices (AAD), have further increased the safety of the sport.
Types of Skydiving
-
- Tandem Skydiving: This is the most popular form of skydiving for beginners. In a tandem jump, a novice skydiver is attached to an experienced instructor who manages the entire jump, from exit to landing.
- Accelerated Freefall (AFF): For those seeking a more immersive experience, AFF provides a structured training program. Jumpers undergo a series of progressive levels, each involving more responsibilities and freefall time, until they achieve full solo status.
- Formation Skydiving: Also known as “belly” or “RW” (Relative Work), formation skydiving involves a group of skydivers flying together in various predetermined formations during freefall.
- Freeflying: Freeflying is a discipline that emphasizes vertical body positions, allowing for more creative and acrobatic maneuvers during freefall.
- Wingsuit Flying: Wingsuits are special jumpsuits with fabric between the arms and legs, creating wings. This enables skydivers to glide horizontally at high speeds before deploying their parachutes.
Safety
Safety is paramount in skydiving, and the sport has seen continuous improvements in training methods, equipment design, and regulations. Strict guidelines and protocols are in place to ensure the well-being of participants, and ongoing training is essential for all levels of skydivers. Australia has an excellent safety record in the skydiving arena thanks to the tireless work of the Australian Parachute Federation (APF).
“The Australian 10 year average up to 2022 is two fatalities per year. The five-year average shows one fatality per 215,886 jumps in Australia versus the world-wide five-year average of one fatality per 159,156 jumps.” — Australian Parachute Federation 2022 Annual Report
